Long before she became one of America’s most recognizable television personalities, Judy Sheindlin was simply a determined young girl growing up in Brooklyn, New York. Born on October 21, 1942, Judy was raised by her parents, Ethel and Murray Sheindlin. After graduating from high school, she attended American University before earning her law degree from New York Law School. At a time when relatively few women pursued careers in law, Judy quickly proved she had the confidence and determination to succeed.

She began her legal career as a corporate attorney but soon realized courtroom work was where she truly belonged. In 1972, she became a prosecutor, earning a reputation for being tough, fair, and direct. Her no-nonsense approach eventually attracted national attention, leading to a feature in the Los Angeles Times and an appearance on 60 Minutes that transformed her career.

In 1996, Judy brought her courtroom experience to television with the debut of Judge Judy. The program quickly became one of the most successful courtroom shows in television history, captivating audiences with her straightforward style, quick decisions, and memorable one-liners. For 25 seasons, she remained one of daytime television’s biggest stars and one of the highest-paid personalities in the industry.

During the show’s run, Judy experienced a frightening health scare. While filming in 2011, she suddenly developed double vision and had difficulty speaking. Colleagues urged her to seek immediate medical care, and doctors later determined she had suffered a transient ischemic attack (TIA), often referred to as a “mini-stroke.” Fortunately, she recovered and returned to work.

When Judge Judy concluded in 2021 after an extraordinary run, Judy wasn’t ready to retire. Instead, she launched a new courtroom series, Judy Justice, continuing to entertain audiences with the same intelligence, confidence, and unmistakable personality that made her famous.

Judy’s personal life has also attracted attention over the years. She has been married three times, including twice to Judge Jerry Sheindlin. After divorcing, the couple later reunited and remarried, proving that sometimes love deserves a second chance. Together, they have built a lasting relationship that has endured for decades.
